N.O.R.C. | SENIOR CENTER | MEALS ON WHEELS

Meals on Wheels

Since 1966, Stanley M. Isaacs Neighborhood Center has delivered more than 2.4 million healthy, nutritious meals to the homebound elderly on Manhattan’s East Side. During the past fiscal year, we served over 166,000 meals through Meals on Wheels deliveries and in our Senior Center.

For the homebound elderly, many of whom are too frail to shop or cook for themselves, Meals on Wheels extends a lifeline. In addition to providing sustenance to many poverty-stricken older people who are struggling to get by on cereal and crackers, our deliverers, caseworkers and volunteers also provide light shopping and escort services.

The average length of employment for our Meals on Wheels deliverers is a little over eight years, so our clients frequently develop close relationships with their deliverers. The daily contact with the friendly faces of Meals on Wheels deliverers not only helps counteract debilitating isolation, it also has proved lifesaving.

Partly funded by the New York City Department for the Aging and Citymeals-on-Wheels, the Stanley M. Isaacs Meals on Wheels program was the first program of its kind in New York State. For over 37 years, this program has helped thousands of senior citizens on the East Side of Manhattan live more independent, healthier lives in their own homes.

Elders at Home

The need for friends or even just friendly conversation is the same at age 80 as it is at age eight, but, unfortunately, this need is much harder to fulfill when you are elderly, frail and homebound.

Our unique telephone conference call program provides homebound seniors with a social life and a caring, supportive community — all without their having to set foot outside their doors.

More than 260 individuals participated in 900 conference calls last year. The conference calls allow seniors to enjoy friendly chats, reminisce with colleagues about old times, commiserate over health problems or discuss cultural and current events. Participants have struck up lasting friendships and even love relationships over the phone.

Our conference call offerings, led by engaging, committed volunteers, include health and wellness, current event discussions, armchair tours of local museum exhibits, and a very popular Sing-Along call.

Seniors can also engage in peer to peer support through support groups ranging from diabetes to bereavement to men's and women's issues. In addition, they can obtain case assistance from staff for concerns such as healthcare or entitlements.

  • 60 and over
  • No fee
  • Socialization, education and recreation through telephone conference calls
  • Supportive services including friendly visits and well staffed local trips
  • Monthly newsletter sent by mail or delivered to Meals-on-Wheels recipients
