Afterschool Learning Centers & Summer Day Camp
As the point of entry into our youth programs, the Afterschool Learning Center is critical to the educational and social success of underprivileged inner-city children ages 5-11.
Isaacs Center Afterschool programs provide educational
enrichment emphasizing thematic-based learning. Programs
are based in youth development principals implemented
by young adult Group Leaders. Our Afterschool programs
offer children ages 5 to 10 a fun, socially positive learning
environment where they can develop their social skills
and cultural awareness of the neighborhood they live in.
At two Isaacs sites, P.S. 198 and our Community Center at 1792 First Avenue, children participate in a broad range of enriching activities within a safe, nurturing environment. With guidance from their group leaders — most of whom have come through the Isaacs Center 's youth programs — children decide on a topic for each semester. Group leaders develop reading, writing, music, drama, math and science activities relating to the theme. This child-centered approach not only sparks curiosity and stretches the imagination, it also empowers children to meet life's challenges in a positive way.
The Isaacs Center's Summer Day Camp provides a structured,
safe environment in which 100 kids aged 6-12 strengthen
skills they learned in school and — most of all — enjoy
their summer vacation during the eight-week full day program.
For an additional 112 children we offer an afternoon camp
for summer school students. The eight weeks culminate
in a jubilant End of Summer Festival during which campers
showcase the projects they have worked on all summer.
At both Afterschool sites, we have launched a pilot
project to combat teasing and bullying in the after school
setting. The H.E.L.P. project (Helping Everyone Live Peacefully)
is integrated into the daily aspects of programming and
has been running since 1999.
What are the goals of the H.E.L.P. project?
- Create an environment that does not accept teasing and bullying.
- H.E.L.P. parents, teachers, and students be more aware of teasing and bullying
- Teach students coping skills
- H.E.L.P. students become more aware of others' feelings
- Introduce ways of addressing teasing and bullying
- Dispel myths that teasing and bullying behavior is just "kids being kids"
What is the H.E.L.P. curriculum?
- H.E.L.P. means Helping Everyone Live Peacefully.
- It is a curriculum designed for group leaders who work with students in after-school programs.
- In addition to addressing teasing and bullying, the curriculum activities provide strategies for promoting tolerance.
- The curriculum is implemented through games and interactive activities.
